Novel shockwave device delivers comfortable and quiet treatments, expanding the application for shockwave therapy in veterinary medicine.
[CARMEL, INDIANA, JULY 2025] — Newly published research demonstrates that a novel focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (f-ESWT) device produces clinically significant improvements after TPLO surgery with comfortable and sedation-free treatments.
Historically, f-ESWT has been difficult for veterinarians to administer because f-ESWT devices are commonly loud, treatments are uncomfortable, and application typically requires sedation or anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of this novel device in clinical application for TPLO recovery. The research was performed with Curative Sound’s CS-Pro VET, the world’s first portable, handheld, battery-powered f-ESWT device.
Author Samuel P. Franklin, MS, DVM, PhD, DACVS, DACVSMR commented, “Based on the pilot study we performed, we found that treatment with the CS-Pro VET was easy to perform and well tolerated without any need for sedation. Accordingly, we were excited to perform a pivotal clinical trial to determine if this novel shockwave device would result in measurable improvement in patients following TPLO.”
The study included 30 dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease that were treated with TPLO. Half the patients were treated with f-ESWT immediately following surgery and at two and four week post-surgical recheck appointments, while half the patients received sham treatment at these time points. Patients received treatment in five anatomical areas. Objective gait analysis using a pressure-sensitive walkway showed that dogs in the treatment group had significantly greater clinical improvement by four weeks postoperatively at a trot, providing evidence that treatment with this novel piezoelectric device can result in therapeutic benefit.
Chris Welsh, CEO of Curative Sound added, “Curative Sound’s mission is to increase the accessibility of shock wave therapy by bringing ultra-portable, highly effective focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy to as many patients as possible. We are very pleased with the outcome of this study that demonstrates clinical efficacy of shock wave therapy delivered with the CS-Pro VET.”
